For a seriously entertaining drive or fun alternative route to Wave Rock, don’t miss the Tin Horse Highway!
This bright open-air gallery of eclectic equine art is well worth the drive. What started as an authentic community campaign to promote the annual Kulin Bush Races has become one of Western Australia’s most popular self-drives. The cheeky horses have been made by local community members out of bit and pieces found lying around farms and reflect the humorous side of Wheatbelt lifestyle.
The Tin Horse Highway is FREE and OPEN all year round.
Where is the Tin Horse Highway?
Kulin is a small farming town, just three hours southeast of Perth. The Tin Horse Highway is a 15km kilometre stretch of road which heads east from the town of Kulin out to the Kulin Bush Races Track at Jilakin Rock. The road’s official name is the Gorge Rock-Lake Grace Road.
Whilst the majority of tin horses are found on the Tin Horse Highway, you will also find many equally impressive and imaginative tin horses along other roads in the Kulin Shire and in Kulin town. All tin horses in the region contribute to the Tin Horse Highway story and reflect the vibrant, good-humoured community that have built them.
There are currently over 70 tin horses displayed on the Tin Horse Highway, in the townsite of Kulin and along other roads to Kulin.
West Kulin Horses
On the western side of town, you will find many tin horses including the BIGGEST tin horse in the region! The ‘West Kulin Whoppa’ tin horse is a reflection of many years of friendly competition between East and West Kulin farmers. The tin horses to the west provide a fantastic introduction to the Bush Races and the Tin Horse Highway.
Telling the Tin Horse Highway and books to purchase
The Kulin community loves to share its stories behind the metal masterpieces and their makers. When visiting Kulin you read interpretive signage in the Discovery Zone located in the Kulin townsite that will allow you to ‘meet’ some of our talented tin horse creators.
You can find out more by picking up a copy of the ‘Much More than Metal’ souvenir book (on sale at the Kulin Visitor Centre) and watching our short film which features a selection of local tin horse ‘artists’ in their ‘studios’. CHECK IT OUT NOW on YouTube.
YOUR SAFETY IS A SERIOUS MATTER!
Be careful when travelling and stopping on the Tin Horse Highway and other roads in the region. All roads are used by trucks and cars and pose a dangerous and potentially life threatening situation if common road sense is not observed.
