So, you’ve locked in your travel plans, you’ve researched the route and it’s almost time to hit the road. But what do you pack?! Setting off on your Golden Outback road trip can be a little daunting for some, so we’re here to help! This is our checklist of everything you will need for your outback adventure through our slice of Western Australia.
Water
This is number one for a reason. When travelling in the outback you should always carry plenty of water, just in case your vehicle breaks down and you have to wait for help. We suggest taking 7 litres of water, per person, per day. If you’re travelling to really remote areas, we’d say take even more. You can never have too much.
Food
Work out where you can stock up along your route and get enough food to last you between stops. Most of the Golden Outback is punctuated by little shops or petrol stations, but it pays to do your research first. And if you’re exploring more inhabited areas, then stock up on all important lollies and snacks to make it really feel like a road trip!
Maps or GPS
You can’t rely on Google Maps in further reaches of the Outback, so make sure you have a downloaded GPS program on your phone or a good old-fashioned map.
Mobile phone
Make sure your phone works and set up a killer Spotify playlist while you still have Wi-Fi and download to your phone or computer, so you can listen on the go. Some stretches of the outback can take many hours to complete, you don’t want to be stuck listening to the same CD on repeat for 8 hours!
Camera
Have it to hand as you never know what you’ll see en-route. From wildlife to wildflowers, be ready to snap those special moments!
Sunscreen and a hat
The Aussie sun is harsh. Be sure to slip, slap and slop even when you’re in the car. Don't forget your wide brim hat when out exploring.
Insect repellent
If you’re planning on hopping out at various spots along the way, be sure to have some insect repellent on. Mozzies, ants and flies can be hanging around in the outback, so take precautions. Fly nets are also great for night time.
Torch
Even if you’re plan is to arrive at your destination by sundown, you never know what might happen along the way. A torch is another must-have for the car!
First Aid
It’s a good idea to have a basic first aid kit in the car just in case. A few band-aids, paracetamol, eye washes etc. can be crucial when travelling.
Rubbish bags
It’s a great idea to keep a few garbage bags in the car. You may decide to stop for a picnic along the way and if there might not be facilities/bins. At least with bags, you can pop all your rubbish in one place ready to be binned when you get to the next town.
Toilet roll
Pretty self-explanatory.
Personal locating beacon
These are good if you're going to some of the more remote places in our state. They're available for under $300, so if you're really going off the grid, they're worth the investment!
Wet wipes
Perfect when travelling with kids but surprisingly useful for adults too!
